Hell, a large majority of that post was going into how they're complete and utter opposites to one another.Īgain, the brunt of that post was how Nier ends up sharing a lot of Caim's mannerisms and attitude towards his enemies post timeskip -exactly how the prince in question acted after how he lost everything in the worst way imaginable on his 18th birthday- as well as how their motivations, relationships with their companions and the ultimate effect their influence on their respective worlds provides a night and day contrast between them. I also never said that Caim wasn't meant to be Taro realistically considering what kind of person would murder countless people for the sake of their goal and that Nier wasn't the result of him thinking a person could kill countless if they honestly believed they were in the right and doing the right thing. I really don't think it's that far-fetched to assume the parallels between Caim and Nier were intentional given the fact that they were the first two main characters Yoko Taro came up with. Nier is absolutely driven by his love for his sister. Caim is driven by revenge more than love, losing Furiah just breaks the last of his bonds to normal people. Caim's struggle is against an army and involves swords no matter what. Nier's struggle is to keep Yonah fed and sheltered and healthy. Like they do both have a little sister to protect, but for Nier that is mostly a mundane process. What's more, the parallels mentioned are hiding a lot of differences. Going by interviews Caim's bloodthirst is down to Yoko Taro considering what kind of person would actually murder countless soldiers, while Nier's is more of a reflection on things like the post 9/11 wars and his growing awareness of how a person can justify slaughter to themselves.

The continuity of certain character traits throughout the series is simply down to Yoko Taro dwelling on similar questions throughout, while the weapons are just a fun lore thing (that also means the designers don't have to come up with all totally new weapon designs every time), and the character design is purely about consistent appeal. It's making a lot out of parallels that don't really have any deeper meaning to them.
